Alice made her debut in `The Thimble Theatre' on Sunday, December 10th, 1933 in the famous `Plunder Island' continuity. She was originally controlled by the Sea Hag and was intended to horrify readers instead of amuse them. After the Plunder Island story she would leave the strip, allegedly because she was giving young readers bad dreams. She would soon return however after being revamped by Segar and dressed in a skirt and flowered hat to make her less menacing. She would become Swee'pea's unofficial nanny.      Of course Spinach isn't a character in `The Thimble Theatre', but where would Popeye be without it? Why Segar chose to have Popeye favor a spinach diet is open to debate. According to Bud Sagendorf, Segar needed a somewhat logical explaination for Popeye's superhuman strength and his ability to withstand punishment. At the time nutritionists were praising spinach for it's vitamins and iron content so Segar decided to have Popeye eat Spinach. In his early days in the strip though, Popeye didn't limit his diet to spinach. In fact it's never mentioned. Popeye would and did eat a variety of things including beef, hot dogs and even hamburgers. In fact no mention is ever made of his preference for spinach until June 26, 1931, a full 29 months after his debut. For an expanded essay on Popeye's favorite dish click on the LINK.
