Thanks much for the great website. I am pretty much a lifelong Popeye fan. The very first image I ever saw on a television set (we didn't call 'em TVs back then) was a Max Fleisher popeye cartoon. I have been a Segar fan since third grade. My teacher had a children's magazine from her childhood in our classroom library and it had an article about Popeye. I remember seeing drawings of Popeye, Oscar, King Blozo, and the Jeep. What intrigued me was the Segar signature with the cigar. It really grabbed me.
My next good exposure came after high school with the nostalgia press hardcover with the 1936 vintage dailys. The Grail to me.
I appreciate the biographical info about Segar on you website and other web sites. I enjoyed the info within the introductions to Nostalgia Press and Fantagraphics Segar Popeye books. But a more detailed book would really appeal to me. Unfortunately, I figure such a book would not be a good business decision to publish.
Maybe this website is the best shot we have of compiling E.C. Segar's chronicles.
I read on this website that Segar was diagnosed with Leukemia. Are you sure this is true. I got a letter back in the 80's that lead me to believe the actual diagnosis was not so clearly known at the time. I heard that he was diagnosed with something called "Bright's disease" which I believe has something to do with the kidneys.
I wonder if any of Segar's children are still alive or if there are any other knowlegable grandchildren? Are there other photos that could be obtained?
I think Bill Blackbeard had some contact with the Segar family years ago. And Bud Sagendorf would have been a great source of direct information, but unfortunately, he is gone.
What I fear is that with the passing of years and the loss of people, we will probably not be able to piece together his full biography. I also suspect that information about Segar's relationship with King Features is beyond our reach.
Please post any new Segar biographical information, confirmed or yet to be confirmed and feel free to send me E mails about Segar.
    Thanks,
    Yours Trulie - B. L.

We agree that a full biography on Segar would be a hard sell to any publisher interested in making a profit. Most if not all of his fans would be interested in reading such a book but the rest of the public would most likely ignore it. Therefore the biography would have to be published by a vanity press with the costs born by the author and any financial backers he or she might have and they'd better not expect to ever see a return on their investment.
That isn't the biggest problem however. Biographical information on Segar is scant in our experience. It seems like (almost) everyone who writes about Segar regurgitates the same facts as everyone else and we share that guilt. The assertion that Leukemia killed Segar has been long accepted without question because no other cause has been mentioned. You may very well be correct that Segar died of "Bright's Disease" but how will we ever know? Any documentation you can supply would be appreciated (and credited to you).
Obviously Elzie Segar is long dead as is his widow, Myrtle. To the best of our knowledge their Daughter, Marie, has past on but their son, Paul, may still be living and at least one grandson, Tim. Tim passed through Chester a few years ago and was invited back as a guest of the fanclub during the picnic but had to cancel before the weekend. Since then there's been no contact which is too bad.
If anyone is researching Segar's life it hasn't come to our attention. This website and forum is intended to become a depository to compile as much information on Segar and his character creations as possible. Anyone viewing this site who has information or documentation they would like to share is encouraged to do so. Hopefully the site will eventually become the best source for anyone doing research on the subject of Segar, Popeye and anything else Segar ever drew or did. PP

I am a true Popeye fan. I am going to display items that I have collected and to have on display, September 1st. in St.Louis, Missouri's Librar on Weber Road. It's the Weber Branch Library. For an entire month. The characters of Popeye and various items with Popeye displayed on them. I also have an empty can of spinache to display,(I must say I love spinache). I am 69 1/2 and a kid at heart. I also have a very old comic book of Popeye. I am excited to display these items. If you come to St.Louis visit the Library and see my display. H. M.

Your display sounds interesting and the time coincides with the annual Popeye Picnic in Chester, Illinois, about two hours from St. Louis. This year's picnic will be September 9-11. Hopefully anyone passing through St. Louis enroute can stop by to see your collection and possibly you can attend the picnic. PP

I once owned a Big Little Book in which Bluto made an appearance. In the book, he is called Muscles (a name that has the same number of syllables as 'Bluto') and is after a pirate's treasure that was left behind on a deserted island that Poopdeck Pappy had been marooned on years earlier; he stows awat on Pappy's ship with his henchmen and when they get to the island, they leave Pappy's ship and camp out in the pirate's wrecked ship.
Of course, as usual, Popeye defeats him and at the end of the story - when the pirate's chest is opened - it turns out to contain a set of old love letters! The pirate had quietly hidden them away in his chest as he received them - they were obviously very precious to him. Strangely enough, though, in this story Popeye and Pappy speak in perfect English - it was obviously written by the same person who wrote POPEYE GOES ON A PICNIC, a Wonder Book.

I am looking for a Popeye costume for my 5 year old grandson. Wears a size five.
    Thanks.  AB

    AB,
Our suggestion is to try "Spinach Can Collectibles," located in Segar's hometown of Chester, Illinois. It's the only shop we know of that specializes in all things dealing with Popeye. They're also the headquarters of the fanclub. Their website is www.popeyethesailor.com or email them at spinach@neondsl.com. You can also phone them at (618)826-4567. PP

My brother and I used to watch popeye all the time when we were kids and there was this one episode that someone said to someone else "wake up little rosebud, wake up"......who said it to whom? and what episode....can you help me out??
Also thank you for such a wonderful site!!! I originally looked up the site because I couldn't remember the character "alice"......I was talking to someone and trying to tell this youngster about this character from an island that was bald headed, but a girl and she wore a dress....Your site answered my question and gave me great history on all the characters....thanks for a trip down memory lane.
Please respond to my question if you have an answer for me.

    L.A.,
It took a while and was a group effort but the name of the cartoon you're recalling is "Ballet de Spinach," a King Features Syndicate cartoon. In it Popeye goes to visit Olive and finds her practicing ballet. She insists he be her partner and wear a ridiculous costume complete with tutu, wings and a halo. As part of the routine being practiced, Olive tells Popeye to look at a flower and say "Wake up, little Rosebud, wake up." Popeye looks at the flower and instead says "Hey, bud! Wake up!"     It was the Reverend Steve Bierly who recognized which cartoon it was you were citing. Everyone else we asked drew a blank so thanks to Steve for his expertise.     We appreciate your kind comments about the website. It still has a long way to go but we're trying. PP

    Thank you sooooo much!! L.P.
Here's another test.....any way to find out what year that cartoon was made??? No biggie if you can't, I appreciate your help and your great site!!!!
The reason I'm so interested in this particular cartoon is because my twin brother and I used to watch Popeye all the time as kids.....this one is special because we always used to say "rise and shine little rosebud....." This phrase stuck w/ us into adult years and we often would use it when leaving voice mails for each other etc.
My brother was my twin and has since passed away (3 years now)......he was only 42 and my only sibling....so your helping me to really revive great memories of me and my brother.......Sorry for the sad story, but that cartoon and that phrase was very special to both of us. L.A.

"Ballet de Spinach" was made in 1960. All 220 of the KFS cartoons were produced in either 1960 or 1961.

Hello, is there anyone out there that knows for certian witch show this was from...... "Oh, Mys spurs, they jingle jangle jingle"?
I am looking for that show on tape or dvd. It may be from Rodeo Romeo, 1946. J.W.

It took a while to find the answer to your question.
Although "Rodeo Romeo" uses the song in its musical score, the cartoon you're looking for is "Tar with a Star" from 1949. PP.

Dear Forum:     I have a huge collection of very old newspaper strips from about 1918-1945 that I obtained from a fellow back in the 1970's, when I was an extensive comic book and newspaper strip collector. Most of this material has been in storage for over 20 years, and only recently I began digging through it and selling stuff off on eBay. I have been pulling stuff out of boxes, and many times I find things I did not even know I had, so I am having fun going through my "treasures." In a carton of really, really old newspaper sunday comics pages I found a Chicago Sunday HERALD four page section from February 10, 1918 which includes a BARRY THE BOOB strip by Segar. I went to the internet to see what I could find out about the strip, and was very pleased to find what you had on your website, especially the BARRY THE BOOB sample strip. I note that in the 12 panels of this page, there is no signature, but the long strip panel on top does have a signature, "Segar 18" in it. You had asked why the signature in your sample had a "17" in it, and I would assume that it was just Segar including the year (1917) in his signature. I will be photographing my page and putting it on eBay in the near future so I hope it is as rare and valuable as your report seems to indicate. Would you like a copy of the photo of the page? J.S.

Thanks for your note. we're kicking ourselves in the head for not realizing that the "17" on the strip was the year. Your theory makes perfect sense although we don't know why Segar only gave the year and omitted the month and day. we'll ammend the info on the website and give the credit to you unless you'd like your name kept out of it.
We've been looking for a Barry the Boob strips for several years now but so far have found only the one. We would appreciate copies of the page for the site and will credit you on the page. Thanks very much. PP

Great site. Your site took the time to outline the entry of the Jeep into the cast. There is so little information available on the Jeep throughout the Net. Are some sites that delve into the origin, relevance and film footage of the Jeep ? Jeep= Great underdog of the creative world.

The movie "The Imposters" took place on an ocean vessel and the "Poopdeck" was clearly identified as such. Why was it so-called?

The Poopdeck on a ship is the deck at the rear of the vessel. Supposedly the term comes from the latin "puppis" which means stern. So although children everywhere get guilty thrills saying poopdeck and speculating on what goes on there, it merely means the deck at the stern of the ship. PP

My favorate Popeye cartoon is "TOPS IN THE BIG TOP" Popeye and Olive are a very sexy circus performing couple. Olive looks perfect in her circus tutu & circus ballets, I say she also would look in a 2-piece circus costume too. hope to see future popeye cartoons as sequels to "Tops in the Big Top".
Popeye and Olive are the main attraction which they do various circus acts, Brutus is a circus casanova of a weight lifter, & J. Wellington Wimpy is Circus owner, manager & Ringmaster. Popeye and Olive Oyl will be among the top circus performers along with Sigmond & Roy, &the Great Wallendas. sincerly H.S. Jones. a Popeye circus fan.

Great site! I've been a fan of Popeye since I was a little kid and recently completed my collection of the Complete EC Segar Popeye's from Fantagraphics, reprinting the dailies (which I love!!!) I believe that they are redoing those volumes coming up this year.
I had a weird question....when was the first time that the town was referred to as Sweethaven? I assume it wasn't just in the movie right?
    Thanks in advance!

You're partially correct. Rumor has it that Fantagraphics is reissuing the reprinted comics. In the original issue there were some dailies missing as well as a missing panel from one strip. Those errors will supposedly be remedied. Also the Sunday strips will reportedly be reprinted in color.
As to the Sweethaven question, the consensus among our group of "experts" (and we use the term loosely) is that the name was coined specifically for the film. If it was ever used before that it wasn't ever used by Segar. He not only didn't name the town where Popeye and the Oyls lived, he also was vague about the location. In some strips it seems to be on the Atlantic coast while in others it appears to be on the Pacific. Studies have been done of this by people with way too much time on their hands and the answer is that there is no definitive answer. But the name Sweethaven was concocted specifically for the Popeye film. Thanks for the question and enjoy those reprints. PP

Very cool man. Thanks for the response! I couldn't remember any time in the comic strips, comic books or cartoons where it was referred to as that...but then it always just seemed to be there in the same respect, you know? But I was 7 when the movie came out (and I made my uncle take me to see it...it was like Lord of the Rings coming out as a movie for Tolkein fans...I was a Popeye fanatic!) so I guess it's something that has been with me so it feels like it's always been named that.

     Thanks again for the response!
